Tooele

Army Chaplain, (Ret) Major Richard Scott

7/10/1939- 6/15/2024

Richard was born in Ridley Park, Pa to Jeanne and W Stafford Scott. He was the first-born son in a family legacy of ministers. He married his college sweetheart Annebell Kettell on August 11, 1962. He graduated from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago Ill in 1960, Geneva College in 1962, and Gordon Seminary in 1965. He was ordained and began his preaching career at New Gretna Presbyterian Church in 1965.

In 1970 he joined the US Army active duty as a troop chaplain and served 24 years. During that time, he was stationed at Fort Gordon (Georgia), Flak Kaserne (Germany), Fort Carson (Colorado). Schloss Kaserne (Germany), Tooele Army Depot (Utah) and Fort Ord (California). After retiring in 1994, he became a dual pastor for the First Presbyterian Church in Malad, Idaho, and Preston Idaho. He finished his ministry at Community Presbyterian Church in Brigham City in 2006 where he served for 10 years.

From then on, he loved to snow bird in Lake Havasu City Arizona, at the Crazy Horse Campgrounds where he also led the Sunday services. He eventually came back to Tooele in 2017.

Richard is survived by his brother John (Joan), three daughters Teresa King (Roy), Dawn Howsden (Michael), Rebecca Lewis (Mason), 7 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.

Richard will be remembered for his kind and gentle spirit. No one has ever heard him raise his voice unless he was singing in church. He had an amazing tenor voice that could harmonize with the angels.

He also loved stock cars. If there was a track wherever he lived, he would be volunteering to do the invocation. He volunteered for Motor Sports Ministries in Tooele for over 10 years.

The last three years he has resided at Our House in Tooele. He received such fantastic care there and all of the staff feels like family to us. A special thanks as well to Canyon Home Care for the nursing, personal care, and physical/occupational therapies he received.
