Judith Carol Dexter

November 7, 1944 — October 27, 2024

Tooele

Judith Carol Dexter passed away on October 27, 2024, just 11 days shy of her 80th birthday.

Judi was notoriously late to everything, but she made it to heaven in time to celebrate her birthday with her parents and her brother, Jay. Judi was the oldest of seven children, born to Jack Faulkner Dexter and June Wright Dexter on November 7, 1944, at Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake City. At the time of her birth, Jack was deployed with the Coast Guard and was not able to be home, so on December 4, when Judi was just 4 weeks old, June and Aunt Nina packed her up and traveled by train to Seattle, Washington, where Jack met his new daughter for the first time.

The Dexter family moved several times, living in Logan, Utah; Vernal, Utah; and Center, Minnesota. After graduation from high school in Minnesota, Judi attended BYU for a brief time, where she met and married Kelly Monroe Pyne. They had seven children together and later divorced. Several years later, Judi met and married Daniel Waechter, who did a fabulous job stepping in to help Judi raise her brood. They were married for 25 years and later divorced.

Judi was always full of fun and mischief and was known by the grandkids as the “Fun Grandma.” Her grandkids were her joy, and she loved spending time with them. She loved holidays, especially Christmas and Easter, and created many special memories for her family. She could sometimes be overwhelmed by her preparations, and often we would receive a holiday box full of gifts that she had put together a few years before but had just gotten around to mailing!

Judi loved to craft and was usually neck-deep in boxes full of bits and bobs of craft supplies, which she used to create quilts, pillowcases, “bedazzled” jackets, heirloom dolls made from handkerchiefs, and folk paintings, just to name a few. Everyone who knew her has something she created in their home. Her “crate wall” filled with knick-knacks was legendary, and some version of it traveled with her wherever she lived.

Judi is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Jay Dexter, and her son-in-law, Jeffrey Brower. She is survived by her seven children: Kerry (Shannon) Pyne, Kent Pyne, Lisa Brower (Pieter), Daryl (Marlo) Pyne, Wendy (Ron) Conklin, Brent (Lisha) Pyne, and Cheri (Mark) Elwell; 28 grandchildren; and 35 great-grandchildren, with two more on the way! She was looking forward to the day her posterity reached 100, and we have no doubt she’ll make it!

Services will be held Saturday, November 2, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the Coleman LDS Ward House, 180 South Coleman Street, Tooele, Utah.
